On November 15, Bitcoin Cash will experience a tricky fork. As this fork will lead to at least two chains without replay protection, Ledger will pause Bitcoin Cash support to prevent unwanted transactions until it’s clear that these chains are the dominant one.
Why is there a Bitcoin Cash fork?
The Bitcoin Cash fork has originated from conflicting consensus changes between different Bitcoin Cash development teams. As no consensus has been reached, a difficult fork will happen on the 15th of November approximately 4:40 PM GMT (epoch 1542300000), leading to several separate Bitcoin Cash chains. Finally, one of these are the dominant series, which we’ll evaluate to encourage again then.
What does this mean for me?
Ledger will freeze the Bitcoin Cash service until it’s clear that these chains are the stable one, both economically and technically. The main reason for closing the service in this time is to stop undesirable transactions (leading to”replay attacks”), causing potential loss of capital and other possible problems interacting with Bitcoin Cash during this time period. Based on the results of the fork, we’ll communicate about our next move once we have a clearer vision of its own result.
Be advised that through this service interruption, your Bitcoin Cash private keys will stay secured.
If you would like to transact in this time, it’s still possible to use a third party wallet supporting Ledger apparatus, such as Electron Cash, at your own risk.
What should I do?
If you don’t intend to perform transactions with your Bitcoin Cash assets in this service interruption, then no additional action will be required. This means you won’t be able to use your own Bitcoin Cash account through the service suspension. You’ll have the ability to track when Bitcoin Cash will be back online on our status page. Equally, we’ll keep our customers updated via our Twitter and Facebook accounts. Once service returns, you’ll have the ability to get your Bitcoin Cash again.
Should you need or want to continue using a Bitcoin Cash, we would suggest transferring your Bitcoin Cash to another wallet or exchange platform which will keep on supporting it through this time. Please do note that by doing this, you would be accepting the obligation of any result that follows. It’s just as possible that third party pockets which already encourage Ledger devices may offer independent solutions also.
Efforts at scamming are often present during forks. Don’t trust any giveaways and maintain your 24-word recovery term secret, on paper only and on your own. Please be aware that we do not provide phone support.
